Aluminum square tubes are aluminum alloy tubes with square or rectangular cross-sections that are used as lightweight structural materials in fields such as building structures, industrial frameworks, and transportation.
Material Characteristics
Aluminum square tubes typically use 6××× series aluminum alloys (such as 6061 and 6063) as the base material, offering moderate strength, good ductility, and corrosion resistance. Aluminum has a lower density than steel, allowing for a reduction in the weight of structural components while maintaining structural strength. The naturally formed oxide film on the surface of aluminum provides a certain degree of corrosion resistance, making it suitable for use in humid or outdoor environments. Additionally, aluminum square tubing offers good weldability and cold workability, allowing it to be cut, bent, and joined as needed.
Forming Process
Hot extrusion is the primary forming method used in the production of aluminum square tubing. Aluminum ingots are melted to form a molten alloy, which is degassed and refined before being cast into cylindrical billets. The billets are heated and then extruded through an extrusion die to form tubes with a square cross-section. After extrusion, the tubes undergo heat treatment processes such as quenching and aging to optimize the material’s mechanical properties. Wall thickness dimensional accuracy can be controlled through two grades: standard extrusion and precision extrusion.
Due to their light weight, corrosion resistance, and good machinability, aluminum square tubes have become one of the alternatives to traditional steel.
